Tasting Notes

Well-married, intense aromas of plums, dark cherries, cinnamon and cocoa nibs reach out of the glass, beckoning for a taste. The flavors mimic the aromas, with the pleasing, lush mouthfeel and structure one would expect from hillside Cabernet Sauvignon. The hearty tannins are sufficient to allow this wine to age for many years, while remaining silky, adding notes of cassis and brown butter to the finish.

Vineyards

The mountain top vineyards within the Atlas Peak AVA, including Stagecoach Vineyards, provide the grapes for this wine. With its rocky, volcanic, shallow soil, basaltic red in color, and unique climatic conditions, this rugged area provides all the ingredients for growing high-quality grapes.

Winemaking

After traditional fermentation takes place, the wine is aged in French Oak barrels, of which 40% are new, for 30 months.

Accolades

The hint of herbal and red capsicum notes develop into a nose full of dark berries, currants, cigar box and dark chocolate. Medium to full body on the palate, delivering cassis and spices with a silky rounding of tannins. Not super intense but shows class and elegance. Drink now or hold.
Publisher's Pick. Its brilliance shines through toasty oak, with dark chocolate strawberry and a chewy, fleshy mouthfeel. Well developed, sturdy tannins encourage broad flavors of licorice, cedar, and dark berries. Complex and well formatted.
Purple-fruit tanginess lends this wine freshness, as do the volcanic edges of the tannins. The fruit tastes like small wild red berries, with herbal notes of summer savory and tarragon. Sleek and grand, with cleanness and clarity to the flavors, this is an elegant mountain-grown cabernet to serve with roast leg of lamb with rosemary.
Cellar Selection. Great concentration comes with a smooth texture and good balance in this deep, complex and layered wine. Black fruits, dark chocolate, and cassis are wrapped in a velvety texture of fine-grained tannins as this seamless wine soars into a lingering finish. Best 2028–2040.
