Born of the Waihopai Valley, The Ned represents the vibrant diversity that is so prevalent in the Marlborough wine-growing region. One of Marlborough’s famous peaks, The Ned mountain served as the playground for Marisco founder, Brent Marris, during his youth. The ethos “Young At Heart” encapsulates this wine; a true expression of grassroots winemaking that places the energy and liveliness of adventure in every bottle.

Tasting Notes

Distinctly salmon pink in hue, a signature feature of The Ned Pinot Gris, this wine showcases bright floral aromas alongside notes of nectarine and white peach. The broad yet refreshing palate offers juicy lychee flavors complemented by hints of spicy poached pear, delivering a lush and supple expression of cool climate Marlborough Pinot Gris.

Vintage Notes

Vintage 2024 will be remembered for being one of Marlborough’s smaller vintages but also for producing exceptional fruit quality. Despite a dry winter and resulting low ground moisture levels, full dams and positive river flows supplied essential soil moisture for the start of the growing season with budburst in mid-September. Minimal frosts occurred, and though November and December were warm, below-average temperatures potentially contributed to the smaller vintage. From December to February, temperatures rose sharply, accompanied by above-average sunshine and below-average rainfall, leading to drought concerns and an early start to harvest. Perfect weather aided steady picking from February until mid-April, allowing fruit to be picked in perfect condition at peak ripeness delivering consistent levels of concentration and complexity of flavor.

Winemaking

A portion of the Pinot Gris fruit, which is naturally pink in color, underwent a period of skin contact to enhance color and texture in the juice. The fruit was then gently pressed to stainless steel tanks for fermentation. Selected yeast strains were chosen to enhance varietal intensity and mouthfeel with a slow, steady fermentation to preserve these aromatics. The salmon pink color is a stylistic signature of The Ned Pinot Gris. Vegan Certified.
