Overview

Deep purple with violet hues, this flagship wine features boysenberry, hazelnut and chocolate, nutty spices along with hints of coconut and Cuban cigar. Block 6 Shiraz speaks of balance, depth with multiple layers of flavor and extraordinary structure. It has a full, complex midpalate, leading to a silky, warm, lingering finish, supported by juicy ripe velvety tannins. Time and careful cellaring will ensure perfect integration is complete.

Winemaker Notes
The Block 6 vineyard faces east and rows run north-south with vine spacing 12 feet between vines in row. Vines are cane and spur pruned with the canes wrapped on the top wire of the trellis. The present four acres comprises a corner of red loam, some heavy clay in the middle of the block and gravely alluvial soils on the lower side. The underlying geology consists of quartz, ironstone and somesilt-y limestone. Approximately eleven tones were handpicked on March 5, 2012; open-fermented, hand plunged, 21 days of skin contact time. This is the first Block 6 wine to have been matured entirely in French oak puncheons, one-third new oak, two-thirds seasoned oak, for 20 months. The wine was bottled in January 2014.



Serving Hints
Decanting is recommended an hour or two before enjoying. This wine is ideally served at room temperature with meat dishes and hard cheeses.

Interesting fact
Block 6 Shiraz 2012 is the 28th release of this unique single vineyard wine. The original Shiraz vines were planted by Herbert and Frederick in 1892. In 1984 Cuthbert and Colin Kay decided to vinify the Block 6 Shiraz fruit separately and since this vintage it has become our signature wine.
