Ironstone Cabernet Franc 2020

Overview

Balanced, with a medium body. Expressive aromas of bright red berry fruits are mixed with light spice notes and a hint of fresh herbs. The palate offers flavors of red cherry and raspberry with vanilla- oak undertones.

Wine Facts

Winemaker Notes
Cabernet Franc is an ancient French grape varietal linked as one of Cabernet Sauvignon’s parent grapes (crossed with Sauvignon Blanc).

In 1926, the Kautz family began farming in the Lodi region. The winery grows the majority of its Cabernet Franc in two of Lodi’s Sub-AVAs – Alta Mesa (100 feet above sea level) and Sloughhouse (590 feet above sea level with a more diverse topography, and slightly warmer climate). This wine is aged for 2 months in new French Oak. Ironstone Vineyards uses crop reduction, leaf removal, organic materials, and drip irrigation to improve the quality and intensity of flavors. Cover crops, which attract beneficial insects, are also employed. In addition, the winery places owl and wood duck boxes around the vineyards and ponds helping to preserve the surrounding habitats.

“…an unusually frisky interpretation of the varietal. The color is a stunningly bright and deep garnet,
while the smell and flavor is fresh and forward with black fruit, green herbs and ticklish spices. Its wiry
build and zesty finish suggest European more than California.”
