A Brief History of Malhadinha Nova

Herdade da Malhadinha Nova was an abandoned farm in the heart of the Alentejo that the Soares brothers bought with their farther in 1998. While it is a working farm, the real reason they wanted the land has to do with their dream of cultivating special vineyards to produce wines that are different than what has been previously made in the area - wines of such high quality that they amaze those who taste them.

They have realized their dream with a combination of  passion for their wines and hard work, under the supervision of a prestigious wine maker, Luis Duarte (of Herdade do Esporao, where Luis was elected "Winemaker of the Year") and viticulture consultant Ian Richardson, who has a pivotal role in all aspects of growing the grapes at Malhadinha Nova. Together with them, the Soares family making highly-rated, award - winning wines.

The wines are made in the newly-built Malhadinha winery, located right next to the vineyards on a hillside that allows the winemaking process to be as natural as possible, with gravity-fed, open fermentation thanks that have a production capacity of only 150 thousand liters per year. After the hand-harvested grapes are made into wine via a combination of traditional techniques and state-of-the-art technology, they rest in a barrel room that was excavated deep into the hillside to provide perfect conditions for aging such powerfully, sophisticated red wines.
