Meet The Maker Tasting with Hunter Smith of Frankland Estates, Australia

June 8, 2018
5:30 PM-7:00 PM
Burritt Fresh Market, 509 W Front St, Traverse City, MI 49684

We are excited to welcome Hunter Smith of Frankland Estate in Western Australia. Frankland Estate is located east of the Margaret River, four hours south of Perth, and inland from the wild and picturesque Great Southern coastline. Here, the family takes their role as custodians of the land very seriously; nurturing the micro-biology of the soil through organic farming, and supporting causes to improve the health and future prosperity of their local flora and fauna. Founded by Hunter's parents, Barrie Smith and Judi Cullam, wool farmers looking to diversify their land, the family has been dedicated from day one to working in harmony with the land and their 29 vintages of experience and hard work shows in their wines.

The Frankland River region's winegrowing potential was first discovered by the renowned California viticulturist, Dr. Harold Olmo in 1956. Studying the area he reflected upon the similarities between Bordeaux's growing climate and that of the Great Southern area. The river valley has a crucial influence on the region's climate - during the winter and spring it sucks cold air down to the Southern Ocean, creating air-circulation between land and sea that minimizes the danger of vine-damaging frosts. In the summertime it funnels cool and humid air north from the ocean, tempering the afternoon heat to provide a long, slow ripening period for grapes. Almost completely free of pests and diseases, the remote location, far from overcrowded population, industrial centers, and virtually pollution-free, the Frankland Estate offers a pristine, organic grape-growing environment and a wealth of flavor potential. Celebrating 30 years this year, it is the Isolation Ridge vineyard, planted by Judi and Barrie that set the standard for Frankland Estate and over the years their Rieslings have become the benchmark for Australian Rieslings. This Friday, come meet Hunter, taste the culmination of 30 years of dedication, and some of the best Rieslings Australia has to offer - see you here!

Featuring: Frankland Estate Poison Hill Riesling 2015, Frankland Estate Shiraz 2015 and Frankland Estate Riesling 2017
